What Do You Do When Your Fitted Hat Doesn’t Fit Anymore?

When you put on a brand-new fitted hat for the first time, it’s a fantastic feeling. It fits perfectly and looks amazing. Fitted hats are iconic accessories and wardrobe staples. It’s easy to wear them casually or dress them up. The options are endless.

Over time, though, fitted hats may lose the fit you’ve come to know and love. Maybe you changed your hairstyle. Or it might’ve gotten stretched out after letting someone else borrow it. Or maybe you washed your hat, and it accidentally shrank a little. What’s your next step?

Adjust the Size Slightly

If you don’t already have a hat stretcher, this is a good reason to pick one up. Hat stretchers come in different sizes and configurations to help you make fine-tuned adjustments to your fitted hats. For most people, making minor adjustments with a hat stretcher will do the trick.

This hat collector’s best friend works in two primary ways. They help you maintain the size of the hat (in case it shrinks a bit) and help you enlarge the hat incrementally, if you need to go slightly bigger (again, emphasis on slightly). Beyond that, you may want to consider other options.

Share the Fitted Hat Love

One of those other options is to share your love of fitted hats. If you’re not comfortable adjusting your fitted hat or the fit is just a bit “off,” it may be time to pass it along to someone who will appreciate it.

Maybe you have an LA Dodgers 59FIFTY fitted hat collection, and a few hats don’t match your exact size. You might have good friends or family who’d be over the moon to get a well-cared-for fitted hat from your collection!

Opt for an Adjustable Hat (for Now)

One of the most common reasons a fitted hat “loses” its fit is due to a change in your hairstyle (whether that’s more of it or less of it). If you’ve grown out your hair, you can still wear your fitted hats on top, even if it’s not a perfect fit. That’s absolutely in style. You might just need to take precautions to keep it in place.

Alternatively, swap out the fitted styles for adjustable designs like New Era 9FORTY A frame hats for the time being. The fitted might still fit perfectly fine with a new haircut or style, but an adjustable hat ensures you can leave the house with a hat you can adjust on the fly. Then, when you return to your old hairstyle, your favorite fitted hats will still fit perfectly.
